THE BASICS — WHAT IS BOUDOIR PHOTOGRAPHY?

What is boudoir photography?

Boudoir photography is an empowering, intimate portrait experience where women are photographed in a professional studio setting — typically in lingerie, elegant clothing, or tasteful implied looks. At Luminous Boudoir, every session is designed first and foremost to make you feel like the most confident version of yourself. The photographs are the souvenir of that feeling.

Is boudoir photography just for certain body types?

Absolutely not. At Luminous Boudoir, we have photographed over 1,000 women of every shape, size, age, and background. Boudoir is for every woman — not the woman you think you’ll become after you lose the weight or hit the gym. The woman you are right now is worth celebrating. Our photographers know exactly how to pose and light every body type to create images you’ll be obsessed with.

Is boudoir photography explicit or pornographic?

No. Boudoir photography is intimate and sensual, but it is not explicit or pornographic. Think of it as the kind of imagery you’d see in a high-end fashion magazine — confident, feminine, and tasteful. You control exactly how much or how little skin is shown. Most clients choose lingerie sets or robes, but you can be as covered or as daring as you feel comfortable with. We follow your lead, always.

Do I need modeling experience to do a boudoir session?

No experience needed whatsoever — and this is one of the most common fears we hear. Our photographers coach you through every single pose, angle, and expression. You’ll never be left standing there wondering what to do with your hands. Jess is your personal hype coach from the moment you walk in, and by the time you’re 20 minutes into the session, most clients forget the camera is even there.

BOOKING & THE EXPERIENCE

How do I book a boudoir session at Luminous Boudoir?

The first step is scheduling a free consultation call with us. This is a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we get to know you, answer your questions, talk through your vision, and walk you through our packages. If you’d like to move forward after the call, we’ll book your session date and get you set up with everything you need to prepare. You can schedule your consultation directly on our website at boldlyluminous.com.

What happens on the day of my session?

Your session day is a full pampering experience from start to finish. Here’s how it typically flows:

You arrive at our downtown Norfolk studio and get settled in with a glass of champagne.

Our professional hair and makeup team transforms you — this typically takes 1.5–2 hours.

You and Jess (and Ross) spend time in the studio shooting across multiple sets and looks.

We wrap up, and you leave feeling like an absolute goddess.

A few weeks later, you come back for your reveal appointment to see your images and choose your favorites.

How long does a boudoir session take?

A typical Luminous Boudoir session day runs about 4–5 hours from the time you arrive to when you leave the studio. This includes hair and makeup (1.5–2 hours), your actual photo shoot (1.5–2.5 hours depending on your package), and any wardrobe changes. We never rush. This is your day.

Do you offer gift certificates for boudoir sessions?

Yes — gift certificates are one of our most popular offerings, especially for bridal parties, birthdays, anniversaries, and milestone celebrations. A boudoir session makes an unforgettable gift. Contact us through boldlyluminous.com to arrange a gift certificate for someone special.

Do you photograph couples or just women?

Our primary focus is women’s empowerment photography, and the vast majority of our sessions are solo experiences. However, we do occasionally photograph couples for intimate anniversary or boudoir gift sessions. Reach out during your consultation to discuss what you have in mind.

PREPARING FOR YOUR SESSION

What should I wear to a boudoir session?

We recommend bringing 3–5 outfit options so you have variety during your session. Here are our top suggestions:

A lingerie set in a color that makes you feel beautiful (neutrals, blush, black, and deep jewel tones all photograph beautifully in our studio).

A cozy oversized sweater or button-down shirt with nothing underneath — this is a classic look that photographs effortlessly.

A slip dress, silky robe, or bodysuit.

Your partner’s favorite shirt or jersey if you want something personal.

Something that represents you — if you’re a bride, bring your veil. If you’re a dancer, bring your costume.

Should I get a spray tan before my session?

If you love having a tan, go for it — but give it at least 48–72 hours before your session so it has time to fully develop and any streaking to fade. A natural, even tan photographs beautifully. If you’re prone to streaking or haven’t spray tanned before, we’d actually recommend skipping it so there are no surprises on shoot day. Our lighting and editing are designed to make every skin tone look stunning. One word of caution; Not all spray tans are created equal. The safest bet (in our opinion) would be to not spray tan to avoid too much skin discoloration that cannot be reversed once photographed.

How should I prepare my skin before a boudoir session?

Start moisturizing consistently 1–2 weeks before your session — hydrated skin catches light beautifully. Exfoliate gently a day or two before to smooth texture. Stay well-hydrated in the days leading up to your session. Avoid trying new skincare products right before the shoot that might cause a reaction. Our makeup artists will handle the rest on session day.

Should I do my own hair and makeup or does Luminous Boudoir provide that?

Professional hair and makeup by our talented team is included with every Luminous Boudoir session — it’s not an add-on. This is part of the full experience. Our artists are experts at creating looks that photograph beautifully under studio lighting, and they’ll work with you to achieve exactly the vibe you’re going for, whether that’s soft and natural or bold and dramatic.

What should I do the morning of my session?

Eat a real meal, drink plenty of water, and get a good night’s sleep. Arrive with clean, dry hair and a fresh face (no makeup) so our team can start fresh. Wear a loose top or button-down to avoid marks or creases on your skin from tight clothing before the session. Most importantly — give yourself permission to enjoy every minute of this day.

THE STUDIO & LOCATION

Where is Luminous Boudoir located?

Our primary studio is located at 2501 Fawn St, Norfolk, Virginia 23504 — right in the heart of downtown Norfolk. The studio features exposed brick walls, spiral staircases, gorgeous natural light, and multiple unique sets so every session looks and feels different. We also have a secondary location in Tampa, Florida. Sessions are by appointment only.

What does the Luminous Boudoir studio look like?

Our downtown Norfolk studio is one of the most beautiful boudoir spaces in Virginia. It features exposed brick walls, a dramatic spiral staircase, chandeliers, and large windows that flood the space with natural light. We have multiple set areas within the studio so your gallery has variety and tells a story rather than looking like it was shot in one corner of a bedroom.

Do you travel for boudoir sessions?

Yes — we love to travel. We’ve photographed clients in Hawaii, Las Vegas, New York, Florida, and beyond. If you’re dreaming of a destination boudoir session or want us to come to you, contact us to discuss availability and travel details. There is no location we wouldn’t consider for the right session.

Do you serve Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton Roads, and surrounding areas?

Yes. While our studio is in downtown Norfolk, we serve the entire Hampton Roads region — including Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, Newport News, and beyond. Many of our clients drive from across the 757 for their session, and we’ve had clients travel from Washington D.C., Richmond, and as far as out of state to experience Luminous Boudoir.

YOUR IMAGES & PRIVACY

Who will see my boudoir photos?

Only you — and anyone you choose to share them with. Your images are completely private. We never post, share, or use any client images without explicit written consent. If you’d like to remain fully anonymous, simply let us know and your images will never appear on our website, social media, or any marketing materials. Your privacy and comfort are non-negotiable.

How long after my session will I see my photos?

We schedule your image reveal appointment approximately 4–6 weeks after your session. At this appointment, you’ll view your edited gallery together with us and choose your favorite images and any products you’d like to order. This is one of the most emotional and exciting parts of the entire experience — clients regularly cry (happy tears!) when they see themselves.

Will my photos be edited?

Yes. Every image in your final gallery is professionally edited for color, light, and overall look. We do not drastically alter body shape or features — our philosophy is to enhance the natural you, not replace her. What you see in your gallery is you at your most luminous, not a manufactured version of you.

Can I use my boudoir photos as a gift?

Absolutely — this is one of the most popular reasons women book with us. Boudoir albums and prints make extraordinary gifts for partners, especially for engagements, weddings, anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day. We offer a range of album and print products designed specifically for gifting. Your partner will treasure these forever.

COMMON FEARS & GETTING COMFORTABLE

I’m nervous about doing a boudoir session. Is that normal?

Completely normal — and honestly, expected. We have never had a client who wasn’t at least a little nervous walking in. That nervousness almost always transforms into excitement within the first 15–20 minutes of your session. Jess has a gift for making women feel seen, celebrated, and completely at ease. By the time you’re in front of the camera, you’ll wonder why you waited so long.

What if I feel uncomfortable during the shoot?

You are always in control. If anything doesn’t feel right — a pose, a look, a direction — you simply say so, and we adjust. There is zero pressure to do anything you’re not comfortable with. This is your experience, your body, and your story. We follow your lead from start to finish. This is also why we offer a free consultation before your shoot. We will address all of your concerns before the day of so that way you can walk in even more confident than before.

I don’t feel like I’m photogenic. Can I still get beautiful boudoir photos?

Yes — and this is one of the biggest revelations our clients have. Feeling photogenic is a skill, not a trait you’re born with. Our photographers know exactly how to position you, direct your gaze, guide your expression, and use light to create images that stop you in your tracks. Over 1,000 women have walked into our studio feeling exactly like you do right now, and every single one of them left with images they love.
